Fulbright Commission (USEF-Nepal) - Lecture and Policy Discussion Series

Health Care in Rural Nepal in Times of Change

Fulbright Monthly Public Lecture and Policy Discussion Series to Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of US-Nepal Relations

Health care in Nepal’s rural areas poses perennial challenges: geographic isolation, neglect, poverty, illiteracy, and mismanagement. Yet health care in rural Nepal has seen many positive changes in recent years, particularly with decreased maternal mortality rates. There are also many new ideas around, such as about health insurance. This panel will explore some of the challenges and opportunities in Nepal’s rural health landscape in an age of outmigration, technological innovation, and political restructuring. What old ideas are being reworked, and what new ideas are being explored? What’s working and what’s not?

About the Fulbright Lecture Series: In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Nepal, the Fulbright Commission (USEF) in Nepal is organizing a lecture and policy discussion event each month in 2017. The lecture series brings together the alumni of various U.S. exchange programs and other Nepal experts to examine issues of importance to both countries. The views expressed in the lecture series belong to each speaker; they do not necessarily represent the views of the Commission. The events are open to the public.

About Fulbright Nepal: Established in 1961, the Fulbright Commission (or USEF) is a bi-national organization governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Government of Nepal and the US Ambassador to promote mutual understanding, rigorous education and research, and open and fact-based examination of important topics. The Commission supervises Fulbright scholarships, Humphrey scholarships, Opportunity Fund scholarships, and USEF's Educational Advising Center (EAC), which provides accurate, reliable and free information about U.S. colleges and universities.
