Programs for Nepali Citizens
Opportunities for Nepali students and scholars to study or conduct research in the United State are announced in the newspapers, radio and on this website. The competitions are nation-wide and open. Selections are made by the Fulbright Commission's bi-national Board of Directors after an intensive review of applications, English language screening, and interviews.
Near East & South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program (NESA UGRAD):
The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program (NESA UGRAD) is a part of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD Program), a scholarship program managed by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State for emerging student leaders from underrepresented sectors around the world. The program in Nepal commenced during the 2009-2010 academic year, with three students going to State University of New York (SUNY) Cobleskill, New York. We've had a total of 13 candidates attend programs at various universities since then. Participants engage in one year of undergraduate, non-degree studies at a diverse network of accredited two- and four-year institutions. Participants engage in local community service projects and take part in cultural enrichment activities. Host institutions provide participants with academic skill development classes. Fulbright Student Scholarship Program:
The Fulbright Student Scholarship Is sponsored by the United States Department of State and was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Since 1953, when the program began in Nepal more than 450 Nepali students have received Fulbright grants. Since 1961, the Fulbright Program with Nepal has been administered by a binational organization known as the Commission for Educational Exchange Between the United States and Nepal (USEF Nepal). The Fulbright Program in Nepal continues to support Nepal’s efforts at democratization and economic liberalization through the exchange of students and scholars in critical fields such as law, political science, journalism, the humanities, and business administration. Fulbright Senior Scholar/Artist Program:
The Nepal Fulbright Commission (USEF/Nepal) announces the competition for the Nepali Fulbright Senior Scholar/Artist grants for academic year 2013-14. Previously known as the Fulbright Post-Doctoral Research Program, this award will be extended to artists from the academic year 2013-14. Depending on the availability of funding, USEF/Nepal will provide grants to up to four Nepali scholars to conduct post-doctoral research at a U.S. university and/or Nepali artists to undertake an artistic project during the 2013-14 academic year for a period of six months. The awards aim to provide an opportunity to collaborate with U.S. counterparts, forge links between local and U.S. academics and artists, build lasting ties between the two countries through their collaborations and share the experience and learning gained in the U.S. with local counterparts. Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program:
The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is a non-degree program which brings mid-career professionals from developing countries to the United States for one academic year of graduate study and related practical, professional experiences. Fellowships are granted competitively to professional candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to public service in the government, NGO, or private sectors and potential for national leadership. The Humphrey Program also offers a Long Term English language training opportunity to facilitate the participation of candidates from non-elite populations, rural areas, minority groups and others who may be excellent “Humphrey Material” but are lacking the necessary language skills.
