| | Fulbright Collaborations in the Arts Fulbright continues to support collaborative research in the Arts and artistic relationships between the U.S. and Nepal. Through the Fulbright grant, American students and scholars have partnered with institutions to study ancient traditions, rituals, indigenous heritage and have played key roles in documenting such waning art forms. 2021-2022 U.S. Student Researchers Peter Makela and Rose Schwietz are studying various forms of Nepalese arts for their Fulbright research. |
| | |
| U.S. Student Researcher Rose Schweitz |
| | Rose is a director, performer and educator born and raised in Minnesota. For her Fulbright Research, Rose is studying and documenting two traditional Nepalese dance-drama forms. The first, Ghatu, is a Gurung cultural practice lasting for five days that tells the story of an ancient King Parsuram and Queen Yambawati. The second dance, Mani Rimdu, is a Tibetan-Sherpa masked dance that takes place at the end of the annual fifteen-day Mani Rimdu ritual, conducted to celebrate the beginning of Buddhism and for the wellness of the world. Rose’s intention is to document the performance details and techniques of these two fading art forms and through creative, practical research, she hopes to develop an original theatre piece that showcases and derives inspiration from Ghatu and Mani Rimdu with her host institution One World Theater. | |
| | |
| U.S. Student Researcher Peter Makela |
| | Peter Makela, a visual artist from Pennsylvania, is studying Shakya Chokden’s unique view of Madhyamaka philosophy in relation to his observational painting practice of the sky. Peter’s Sky Paintings explore the intersection between perceptual painting, abstract painting and states of contemplation. He is also learning traditional stone color painting materials and techniques from both Paubha and Thangka painters. He will continue his investigations of sky painting with these traditional painting materials during his Fulbright research. Peter’s affiliate institution for his Fulbright research in Nepal is Rangjung Yeshe Institute. | |

| Astha Chand (fourth from left) with Opportunity Funds alumni |
| | This month is going to be a bittersweet moment for the EducationUSA Advising Center team. With heaviness in our hearts yet with great appreciation, the EAC team wishes Ms. Astha Chand all the very best as she moves on from USEF-Nepal on June 17, 2022. She has been a vital part of the EAC team for the past six years, and as an adviser, she has touched the lives of thousands of students. To say the very least, on her very first day, 800 plus students visited the center. Astha has been an inspiration to many! The center and the EducationUSA network will deeply miss her contributions. We colleagues will cherish her friendliness, helpfulness, kind deeds, encouragement, creativity, and many more memories we have made with her. We wish her the best in her new career move! | |
