Message From The Commission

The Fulbright Commission in Nepal is deeply saddened by the recent events unfolding in Ukraine and stands with the people of Ukraine against this senseless aggression and declaration of war by the Russian state. The invasion of a sovereign nation through brutal violence can only be understood as an act of aggression against humanity itself and we stand in solidarity with all of the people of Ukraine, the courageous people of Russia protesting against the war and send prayers for peace to all suffering, from Nepal.

We also wish the best to all of the team members working for safe relocation of the Fulbright grantees from Ukraine to Poland, Hungary and Moldova across the various Fulbright Programs in the region and in Washington DC and want to thank everyone for their leadership in handling this very important and sensitive task.

The Fulbright Commission in Nepal is scheduled to reopen English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program starting March 15, 2022, after a two-year hiatus. Due to the fact that the pandemic persists and the safety of the grantees remains our top concern, the ETA grantees will be placed in public schools in the periphery of the Kathmandu Valley, within an hour’s commute at the most to a major hospital in case of serious medical emergencies. The Commission is confident of being able to run a wholly engaging program that will support the improvement of English language competencies of Nepali students through the placement of native speakers of the English language from the United States in the school system for up to 10 months. And for the U.S. grantees, to learn deeply about Nepali community life, educational realities and experience life outside of their comfort zone but one that will help develop their knowledge, leadership and cross-cultural understanding, which we hope will contribute to their active engagement in creating a more peaceful world.

Fulbright Foreign Student (Master’s) Program Information Session

The Fulbright Commission in Nepal organized the Fulbright Foreign Student Program Information Session on February 15 to provide detailed information about the application process and to answer queries from prospective applicants. Fulbright Senior Program officer Rakchhya Maharjan facilitated the session. The recording of the session is available here: Part I & Part II. The FFSP provides funding (including travel) for a Master’s degree program of up to two years at selected U.S. universities, in any field except Medicine and Nursing.

Maggie Doyne’s Book – Between the Mountain and the Sky

Fulbright Commission/USEF-Nepal Board Member Maggie Doyne (Co-Founder of BlinkNow and CNN Hero) has recently written her memoir Between the Mountain and the Sky . Maggie’s memoir shows us what can happen when a single person takes a decisive action to help another and, in the process, changes the lives of thousands —including her own. Learn more.

EAC Highlights

On February 24, EducationUSA Nepal's Advising Center hosted a virtual panel discussion related to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to commemorate Black History Month. In the panel, we had three Nepali students currently studying at an HBCU. Panelists Bibek Itani from Claflin College, Malika Lawaju from Fisk University, and Pragya Neupane from Alcorn State University discussed how they chose an HBCU for their higher education, college experience, scholarships received, and opportunities on campus. Furthermore, the panelists also explained the culture on campus and how an HBCU prepares students for a professional career.

Alumni Feature

Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP) alumni Dipti Sherchan and Ashmina Ranjit are currently engaged in the ongoing Kathmandu Triennale 2077. Dipti was an FFSP 2017 grantee to the University of Illinois at Chicago where she studied Anthropology. She is working with the curatorial team to oversee the exhibition at Nepal Art Council, Siddhartha Art Gallery, Bahadur Shah Baithak, Taragaon Museum and Patan Museum. On the opening day of the event, she was the speaker of KT Kurakani where she presented A Series of Encounters with Artists whose works point towards Critical Articulations on Indigeneity.

Ashmina Ranjit was 2004 FFSP Grantee to Columbia University where she studied Fine Arts as well as 2011-12 Fulbright Visiting Scholar to Virginia Commonwealth University. At the inauguration ceremony of the Kathmandu Triennale event, she presented on Artivism: Political Conciseness through Art. Furthermore, her works will be on display at the Triennale exhibition.
