| | The Fulbright Commission in Nepal is very pleased to welcome the newly appointed Board Members and grateful for the leadership of the members who are continuing to steer the Commission for the next term. The Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States and Nepal (also known as “the Fulbright Commission” or “USEF/Nepal”) is a binational organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of five Nepalis appointed by the Government of Nepal and five Americans appointed by the American Ambassador. The Board sets policies, award grants and oversees the Commission’s Secretariat which administers the exchange programs. The Commission administers educational exchange activities between Nepal and the United States and provides information about American higher education opportunities to the Nepali public through the program. To know more about our Board Members, please visit USEF-Nepal Board of Directors. | | | | |
| | | October is a special month in Nepal, when the monsoon finally falls back and opens the skies for azure skies and cool crisp winds and many communities around the country ready to celebrate the closing of the harvest and other cultural festivals. The pandemic seriously disrupted the festival season last year and while we are thankful we are in a better place in Nepal with the rate of infection decreasing and rate of vaccinations increasing, the Commission would also request everyone to take the utmost caution and wishes everyone a safe festival season!! We remain hopeful that the improvements in the control of COVID-19 will allow us to resume our US Students/Scholars program starting early 2022, as planned!! | |

| | | | | The Opportunity Funds Program is an initiative by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs to make U.S. higher education more accessible to non-elite international students from disadvantaged backgrounds. USEF-Nepal's EducationUSA Advising Center is the official source in Nepal for information and advice on U.S. higher education and administers the Opportunity Funds Program in Nepal. Through this program, EducationUSA is committed to helping non-elite international students from disadvantaged backgrounds to have the best possible chance to experience higher education in the United States. With the belief that lack of finances should not deter a talented student from applying to a U.S. university, the Opportunity Funds Program funds provides selected up-front costs associated with applying to U.S. colleges and universities. In 2011, our center selected the first batch of Opportunity Funds students, and since then, the OF community has been growing each year. Currently, the community consists of more than 150 students. This year, for the very first time, the OF community decided to run an election to nominate its leaders. | |
| | | |
| | The OF community elected Bikash Thapa Magar and Rajiv Bishwokarma as our first OF Alumni Coordinators. Bikash is currently pursuing his graduate studies at Youngstown State University and was a former Front Desk Assistant at USEF-Nepal's library. Rajiv studied at Kathmandu University and graduated in 2019, and is now working full-time. Both of them bring a different perspective into this position. Bikash and Rajiv aspire to strengthen the OF community and bridge the gap between the several OF batches. A huge congratulations to our new OAC's and we wish them the best as they start their tenure! | | The Fulbright Program Foreign Student (Master’s) AY 2019-2021 grantee Suyog Prajapati has returned to Nepal after completing a graduate degree in Art History from Rutgers University in New Jersey. During the program, he worked on 17th century Buddhist narrative art from the Kathmandu Valley and transregional connections in Nepali visual culture. He presented about the latter at Yale University’s inaugural Ṣoḥbat Graduate Art History Symposium in 2021. Prior to the pandemic, he also had opportunities to directly engage with artists, conservators, and South Asian art specialists. Upon returning to Nepal, he has collaborated with Artree Nepal and Siddhartha Arts Foundation to produce research reports on Bhaktapur’s Navadurga tradition and woodblock printing practiced by women of the Chitrakar community. Visit Suyog Prajapati's website to know more about him. |
