Fulbright Highlights

AY2022-23 Student Researchers

Our amazing 2022-23 cohort of Fulbright Student Researchers has arrived in Nepal. They will be investigating pertinent issues such as climate change, migration, and disaster risk reduction during their 10 months here.

Claudia Krisko is conducting research on the rising air pollution levels in Dhangadi, Godawari, and Chure. Nicole McCloskey is investigating the push and pull factors, environmental stressors, and political and societal changes that occur as climate migration takes place. Both researchers are affiliated with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). Rachael Lau, affiliated with the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET), will be developing a framework for a multi-geo-hazard early warning system in Kathmandu. Jenna Biedscheid, in collaboration with the Law and Policy Forum of Social Justice (LAPSOJ), will research the lived experiences of Nepali Third Country Nationals on U.S. Military Bases. The Commission conducted an in-country orientation for the Fulbright Student Researchers on September 14 to help prepare them for their time in Nepal.

Research Sharing

Fulbright Student Researcher William 'Jack' Shangraw shared the findings of his research about the impact of Covid-19 on Nepal’s tourism sector at the U.S. Embassy’s American Center on September 19.

Jack’s research, which began in January of 2022, focuses on how guesthouse and homestay operators in Nepal perceive the impact of the pandemic on tourism in their communities, and the resilience and sustainability of different tourism management structures. The challenges of Covid and the benefits of tourism have not been distributed equally among those who rely on the tourism economy, and the new post-Covid landscape provides opportunities for re-thinking how tourism can support local communities across popular and emerging destinations in Nepal.

Advising Center Highlights

The U.S. University Fair

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, in September the EducationUSA Advising Center organized an in-person U.S. University Fair in collaboration with EdPrograms. A total of 16 U.S. colleges and universities participated in the fair. The turnout of 2,265 students made the fair a grand success! Thank you for the immense support from our colleagues at local high schools, colleges, and universities in Kathmandu; student volunteers; and the U.S. Embassy for making this a successful event. Our special thanks to EdPrograms and the 16 U.S. university representatives for choosing to visit Nepal.

SAT Mock Tests

The October SAT is just around the corner. Understanding the anxiety of taking the SAT among Nepali students, the EducationUSA Advising Center conducted three mock tests in September. Taking the mock tests has helped the students familiarize themselves with the question pattern of the actual test, pay attention to time management, identify areas of revision, and get used to the exam-day pressure. Good luck to everyone appearing for the SAT!

Each year over 100 Nepalese take part in exchanges and professional development programs such as the International Visitor Leadership Program, Fulbright, and Humphrey Fellowship to learn more on democracy, good governance, human rights, media freedom, and more. The Department of State Alumni Reception, held on September 22 and celebrating 75 years of US-Nepal relations, brought together 300 alumni of recent exchanges and programs to network and reflect on how their experiences changed their lives. Welcoming the guests, Ambassador Berry congratulated all the talented alumni on their accomplishments and contributions to Nepal’s inclusive development.
