Unmasking Inequalities: Indigenous Pathways in the time of COVID

Join the final of three panels coordinated by the The Fulbright Program Regional Diversity and Inclusion coordinators focused on Indigenous responses to COVID-19. Four expert panelists, Jermani Ojeda from Peru, Andre Barahamin from Indonesia, Victoria Qutuuq Buschman from Greenland, and Dr. Dovan Rai from Nepal, will lead the session and discuss the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Indigenous communities globally. They will share their experiences of how they as advocates and activists continue to advance Indigenous struggles, while also combatting the various forms of intersecting oppression and marginalization that affect daily life for Indigenous communities. Panelists will also offer necessary strategies for ensuring that Indigenous knowledge and organizing are included in current responses to the pandemic and to future global challenges. The panel is in English with live subtitles via Zoom.

One of the panelists, Dr. Dovan Rai represented Nepal as a Fulbright Science and Technology Ph.D. program grantee in the United States in 2008. As a part of her program, she completed her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worchester, Massachusetts. At WPI, she researched learning technologies and focused on multimedia tutors and educational games. Currently, she is affiliated with the Global Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS). Dr. Rai is also a political, social activist who seeks gender justice and also makes frequent commentary on the challenges to access resources and opportunities faced by non-hegemonic indigenous communities. She is an emerging social commentator and political voice in Nepal.
