Writing Effective Essays for a Fulbright Application: Q&A with Fulbright Alumni

The Fulbright Commission is delighted to conduct the second Fulbright Foreign Student (Master’s) Program (FFSP) Information Session focused on writing quality essays and other qualitative parts of application completion.

This information session will feature:

Samjhana Shakya

Hailing from Patan, Samjhana Shakya is a 2013-2014 Fulbright grantee who attended the University of Kentucky to study a Master’s in Public Health (MPH). Her research interests are violence against women, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, community-based public health, and implementation science. Currently, she is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with a major in Health Prevention and Promotion Research (HPPR). Samjhana is passionate about learning and teaching and is aiming to become a life coach soon.

Sujana Timilsina

Sujana Timilsina is a 2016-17 alumna who completed her M.S in Civil Engineering under the Fulbright Foreign Student Program from Colorado State University in 2019. She completed her B.E from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, and has been working for the Government of Nepal as a civil engineer for the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation. Currently, she is pursuing her doctoral studies in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests are hydrology and hydromorphodynamics of rivers, remote sensing, flood modeling, and disaster risk management.

Both FFSP alumni will share their experiences and approach towards application essays, offer their suggestions and recommendations to prospective applicants and answer questions regarding submitting a compelling personal statement and study objective. The session will be facilitated by Fulbright Senior Program Officer Rakchhya Maharjan.

Part 1:

This part of the session covers, the Fulbright Program, master’s Program, general requirements, ineligibility, scholarship benefits, program timeline, and documents required.

This part of the session covers document required (continued), plagiarism, the application process, contact and connect with Fulbright Nepal, and Q&A with prospective applicants.

About the Program

The application for the AY 2023-24 Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP) for Master’s level study in the U.S. is currently open for Nepalese Students. The FFSP provides funding (including travel) for a Master’s degree program of up to two years at selected U.S. universities, in any field except Medicine and Nursing.
