| On the resumption of programs for U.S. Students and Scholars – we are happy to announce the arrival of two of our U.S. Student Researchers in the month of January. Welcome Martine Cartier and William Shangraw! However, due to the sudden and rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, Nepal started seeing a steep rise in number of infections and an alarming rate of infection among the tested by the end of the second week of January. As a result, the Commission consultation with the U.S. Embassy in Nepal decided to delay the arrival of all American grantees scheduled to start late January and February, 2022. We hope to resume their arrivals from March, with the English Teaching Assistant Program and continue on. The Commission has suspended its Educational Advising Center Library and Attestation Services owing to the risk of increasing community spread at the time of a surge. We hope to resume our in-person services soon when conditions are slightly better and the wave is on a significant downward trend. All Educational Advising Center programs are being conducted virtually and very efficiently. The Prometric Testing Center remains open for in-person testing services for all prior scheduled professional/language and standardized examinations, in observance of strict safety protocols. We wish everyone a safe February! | |

| | Fulbright Commission welcomed U.S. Student Researchers Martine Cartier and William Shangraw this January. Martine will study the semi-nomadic dairy industry in Nepal, specifically the supply chains of various traditional dairy products made in the high hills of Nepal and the transhumant lifestyles of its makers. While in Nepal, she will be affiliated with National Forage and Grassland Research Center and Tribhuvan University and will be based in Kathmandu, when not in the communities for research. As a Fulbright researcher, William is examining the role of citizens and local governments in Nepal’s tourism sector, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. He is affiliated with Governance Lab, Lalitpur. William is particularly interested in community strategies for building back sustainable and inclusive models of tourism, given tourism’s increasingly important role in many local economies in Nepal. | | On January 27, the Educational Advising Center organized a ‘Let's Talk Thursdays’ session, which usually takes place once every month. Ms. Garima Rokaya, a participant of our Opportunity Funds Program for 2021, led the session. Garima is a freshman at Howard University majoring in Psychology. In this session, she talked about positive psychology and how everyone can implement it in their day-to-day lives. Additionally, she spoke about Martin Seligman's PERMA theory of well-being and explained how people with a purpose and meaning in their lives are happier. The session was well-attended and greatly appreciated by the participants. | |
