Message From USEF-Nepal

During April, this year’s cohort of Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETA) completed their one-month orientation program and began their nine-month placements at government schools. ETAs Haylee Maude and Pemba Sherpa were placed at schools in Kathmandu Valley; Julia Henke and Missy Bengtson at schools in Kavre District; and Alex Perez and Sarah McGonagle at schools in Dhangadhi. We wish the ETAs, their host schools, and host families all the best for the year ahead.

Fulbright Forum

Fulbright Scholar Dr. Karl Woodmansey’s presentation at the American center

On April 12, U.S. Scholar Dr. Karl Woodmansey wrapped up his five-month Teaching/Research grant in Nepal with a presentation at the U.S. Embassy’s American Center entitled Assessment of Endodontic Education in Nepal: Similar to the U.S., but Different. His talk provided insights on dental and endodontic education, teaching, and research activities in both Nepal and the U.S. During his time in Nepal, Dr. Woodmansey was affiliated with the Kathmandu School of Medical Sciences.

Fulbright Specialist Program

The Nepal Music Center hosted Fulbright Specialist Dr. Daris Hale from March 6-22. As part of her project, Dr. Hale gave seminars and workshops to develop music, music technology, and music pedagogy among students in Nepal. She also conducted needs assessments and evaluations on task force development for performance music programs by exploring the pedagogical approaches of universities in the U.S. She is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Music at Texas State University.

Advising Center Highlights

USEF-Nepal's EducationUSA Advising Center collaborates with U.S. institutions to make in-person and virtual information sessions available to Nepali students. Five institutions—Texas Tech University, the University of Miami, Washburn University, Webster University, and William Paterson University—offered information sessions in April. The sessions, conducted by college representatives, helped students to learn about a variety of topics related to American education and the institutions. USEF-Nepal hosts sessions like these each month. Detailed information is available on our Facebook page.

Alumni Highlights

Stree-Shakti Project

Stree-Shakti Project completed learning workshops for its second and third cohorts at USEF-Nepal on April 1-3 and 7 to 9. The cohorts had 30 and 27 participants, respectively. All were in their final year of college or recent graduates. Women in leadership positions facilitated networking sessions and shared their stories to advise and inspire the workshop participants.

The Stree-Shakti Project is supported by U.S. Embassy, Nepal through the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF 2022) and implemented by the Fulbright Alumni Association of Nepal. It aims to empower women in the energy sector through multi-dimensional sessions ranging from entrepreneurship and law for the energy sector to environment conservation through the use of energy.

Stree-Shakti Project’s call for applications for female students based in Pokhara, Nepalgunj, and Surkhet is currently open.

Humphrey Fellowship Alumni at the UN

Humphrey alumni Sanjeeb Baral participated as a delegate of the Government of Nepal in the United Nations 2023 Water Convention and served as a panelist on Achieving Water Security in Nepal in a Changing Climate organized by the Government of Nepal with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI)-Nepal, World Bank, and Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA). Mr. Baral shared the challenges of building water security in Nepal and stressed the impact of climate change on water resources management.

Mr. Baral was a Humphrey Fellow at Cornell University from 2016-2017. He is currently Deputy Director General for the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation for Nepal's Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. (Courtesy: Humphrey Fellowship)
